Review

By Glen Trew

The Sanken CS-M1 has a unique combination of the wide front pick-up pattern expected of a cardioid mic, but with the off-axis attenuation of a supercardioid. This means it is able to reject unwanted sound outside of the picture frame while more easily keeping the on-camera subject matter (actors talking and ambience) on-axis. While this results in a more pronounced rear “lobe”, boom mics typically have the rear of the mic pointing up and away, so there is usually no significant sound to enter the rear.

It can be shown that cardioid patterns provide the more natural dialog sound, but sometimes at the expense of allowing too much off-axis ambience. The Sanken CS-M1 gives the best of both worlds of cardioid and supercardioid patterns.

The CS-M1 also has a superb combination of sensitivity, and low noise, output level, SPL capability, allowing it to record soft whispers at typical distances without noise, and also handle intense yelling and screaming. The short length gives it very small profile, suitable for booming through doorways and in rooms with low ceilings.

The simplicity of the design allows a price of under US$900, which is very attractive for what will become many sound mixers’ preferred boom mic.
